Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
This is used normally to find out what objects would weigh on other planets. Mass stays the same anywhere, but weight changes according to the field strength. On Earth the gravitational field strength is 10 N/Kg (9.8 N/Kg)
Weight is measured in N
Mass is measured in Kg
Gravitational Field Strength is measured in N/Kg
This formula can be rearranged to form:
Mass = weight
gravitational field strength
Gravitational field strength = Weight
Mass
Examples:
- What is the weight of an object if the mass is 70kg and the gravitational field strength is 3.8N/Kg?
- What is the mass of an object if the weight of the object is 22N and the gravitational field strength is 11N/Kg?
- What is the gravitational field strength when the objects weight is 2500 and the mass is 100?
Answers:
- 70 x 3.8 = 266 N
- 22 ÷ 11 = 2Kg
- 2500 ÷ 100 = 25 N/Kg
